Signed W. Derby and dated 1833. (There is an old, illegible paper label on the back and another label inscribed 'The Bewildered Maid' also with the name N. Bird who was possibly the purchaser. William Derby was exhibiting regularly at the Royal Society of British Artists between 1830 and 1850 and in 1833 exhibited a painting entitled 'The Bewildered Maid' catalogue number 282).
